Child development / Drama games / Consonant time

This quick game helps children switch between listening quietly, speaking clearly and singing expressively.

In Consonant Time, the group walks around the room and responds to your call by freezing, speaking a phrase, or singing it in a fun melody.

This simple game is an ideal warm-up activity, helping children build focus, self-control and vocal confidence.

How to play

1. Teach the three actions

Explain to the group that when you say:

  • Listen - they must freeze and listen carefully
  • Speak - they must say the chosen phrase clearly and with good diction
  • Sing - they sing the same phrase using a fun melody or silly tune

2. Choose a phrase

Start with something simple like: "Pass the paint, please," or "It's time to play!"

3. Call out the actions

Ask the group to walk around the room.

When you call "Speak!", they need to all clearly say the phrase.

When you say "Sing!", they sing it, and when you say "Listen!", they must stop and freeze.

4. Keep mixing it up

Change the order and increase the pace to keep children on their toes.

What it teaches

  • Listening and attention - reacting to changing instructions
  • Vocal versatility - switching between speech and song
  • Diction and clarity - focusing on crisp pronunciation
  • Self-control - knowing when to speak and when to stay still

Variations to try

  • Add movement: Children add a matching gesture for each mode
  • Different characters: For example, speak like a queen, sing like a pirate
  • Partner mode: Play in pairs and echo each other's voice

Principal's notes

Simple but so effective, this game helps children explore the power of the voice in lots of fun, imaginative ways. It's ideal for developing vocal confidence.
